Sri Saptakotishwar Temple

A Sacred Place of Devotion and Peace

About Temple

Sri Saptakotishwar Temple at Narve is among the most ancient and revered Shaivite temples in Goa, with origins tracing back to the Kadamba dynasty period (1148–1179 CE). Initially situated at Naroa on Divar Island, the temple functioned as a royal family deity shrine and held immense spiritual significance across the Konkan region, with references found in sacred texts such as the Sahyadri Khand and Saptakotishadhyan. During Portuguese religious persecution, the original temple was destroyed in 1541 CE, prompting devoted followers to conceal and later relocate the sacred Atma-Ling across the Mandovi River. In 1549 CE, Narainrao Shenvi Suriarao, the Sardesai of Bhatagram, consecrated the deity at its present site in Narve (Hindale), ensuring continuity of worship. The temple regained prominence in 1668 CE when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj commissioned a grand structure over the existing cave shrine, preserving the original laterite sanctum that continues to house the sacred Ling, making the temple a lasting symbol of spiritual resilience, heritage, and devotion in Goa.
